I'm Miwa, the representative of Alive.

On August 10th , I had the opportunity to give a lecture on marketing to high school students at an event hosted by my alma mater, Asahioka High School .

Since we had limited time, I was only able to convey the basics of marketing, but the lecture content was just right for those who are wondering "What is marketing?" , so I would like to introduce it on this blog.



What is Marketing?

To put it more formally, marketing is " a general term for corporate activities, including market research, production, sales, and advertising, aimed at selling products in large quantities and efficiently; or a sales strategy ."

It is said that its origins date back to the 19th century vp r&d email lists in America, when researchers were investigating the process that wheat harvested in producing areas goes through before it reaches places of consumption, and how this leads to increased prices.

Therefore, in a broad sense, marketing can be said to refer not only to sales strategy but to all of a company's sales activities, but I think that these days it is often used in the context of sales strategies and plans.

This time, the lecture was aimed at high school students who had little experience with sales activities, so I explained marketing in a way that was easier to understand.

Marketing can be roughly defined as " what product to make and how to sell it ."

To break it down a bit more, marketing is thinking about "what," "to whom," "where," "how," "how much," and "how many" to sell .

For example, if you want to sell mathematics textbooks to high school students, you could put up a poster in the school cafeteria where many high school students gather at lunchtime that says, "Textbook that will get you into your desired university!" and sell them for 500 yen instead of 600 yen.If your goal is to sell 500 books a month, that would mean selling 20 books a day.

Marketing may sound difficult, but it basically just involves thinking deeply about the above points.

However, the real world (market) is not that simple. I also shared a marketing framework to gain deeper insight into marketing.



The 5Ps of Marketing
The 5Ps of Marketing

The famous marketing framework " The 5Ps of Marketing ". It is often referred to as the "4Ps of Marketing", but recently "Person" has been added, making it the 5Ps.

When coming up with a product, it is important to consider factors other than the product using this framework , but in actual business activities, it is often the case that other factors are considered after the product has been decided.

In that case, the product has already been decided and the content cannot be changed , so you tend to have to consider other elements in your marketing. In that case, your marketing measures tend to be forced.

At a company like ours, we are often consulted only about the "Promotion" aspect after other elements have been decided, but I think the chances of success would be higher if we could discuss strategy together before other elements are decided.

This is also known as SWOT analysis .

To use an example that even high school students can easily understand, if you were to open a new tapioca shop, your analysis would show that its strengths are "the tapioca is chewier than that of other shops," its weaknesses are "the prices are higher than other shops," its opportunities are "there are still fewer tapioca shops in Nagoya than in Tokyo," and its threats are "the end of the tapioca boom."
