Rakuten Capital is a venture capital group that invests in promising startups or incubates new companies. In one of its venture investments , Rakuten made $2 billion from a $700 million investment for a 13% stake. Although the deal has since fallen through, the company has had some victories. Rakuten generated money from Rakuten Capital when it sold its shares for more than the purchase price.

Rakuten Mobile, a low-cost data 4G plan, launched in 2020. For $27 per month, consumers would get access to unlimited data and voice calls wherever Rakuten has network coverage. While the company’s low-cost plan gave it a competitive edge, it did admit that deploying a standalone network can be expensive. Still, the sector can be lucrative, especially given its low churn rate.

In a recent earnings report, the company revealed that Rakuten mobile subscribers spend engineer data up to $260 more on Ichiba than non-subscribers. The company also launched Rakuten Symphony in 2021, a system that allows telecom companies to set up virtualized networks. Symphony oversees customer relationship management tools, a digital app marketplace and cloud storage, which are sold to consumers as white-label offerings.
