Research: 40% of Croatian 13-year-olds spend more than 3 hours a day online

On weekends, the number of people who spend more than three hours on social media rises to 62.3%, and around 30% of them play video games for more than three hours. This was shown by research conducted by the Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation Sciences, University of Zagreb and Croatian Telecom as part of the Tools for the Modern Age project.
Symptoms of addiction, as the most intense form of damage, were shown by about 1.6% of children, and about 3% of them meet the criteria for video game addiction.
The research was conducted on 2055 students with an average age of 13. The research was conducted as part of the Tools for the Modern Age project by the Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation Sciences, University of Zagreb, and Croatian Telecom.
Girls use social networks more intensively , while boys play video games more often. There are also obvious differences with regard to school performance, in that students with poorer school performance use social networks and play video games more , especially in the category of excessive daily internet use (5 or more hours).
Such intensive use of social networks is present in 20% of students with lower academic performance, compared to 8.5% of those with excellent performance, and the same trend was noted in differences in playing video games on weekends.
That is why the Tools for a Modern Age project is focused on prevention – in the first phase, they educated future program leaders, professional associates and teachers in primary schools across Croatia. In the second phase, the educated leaders implemented a prevention program with students, consisting of 12 structured workshops for the whole class, and one lecture each for teachers and parents of children.
