What's New in WordPress 5.4

Post by nurnobi40 »

The latest version is named after American trumpeter Nat Adderley, continuing the tradition of using jazz musician names for all new WordPress releases.

Thanks to the support of SiteGround, who donated my hours to the open source project WordPress.org, I had the honor of being involved for the second time as co-lead of the release, in the role of coordinator.

At this time, depending on how you have SiteGround automatic updates set up, your site should be updated to version 5.4. Let's see together all the most interesting news for WordPress users.

Two new blocks
You can add social media widgets to your post. By clicking on each icon you netherlands mobile database can add links to your profiles and display them within a post.

The second is the “Buttons” block: you no longer need to use a combination of HTML and CSS to create your own buttons, for example, in Call to Actions on a sales page. Just add the button or buttons: you can insert more than one within the same block, adjust the settings (background color, text color, border width, links) and press publish!

New color options
You can now selectively color parts of text within a block. Gradients have been added to the button and cover blocks, and finally, you can apply coloring options to Group and Column blocks.

Full screen writing
New WordPress installations now open the block editor in fullscreen mode by default, for distraction-free writing. Clicking the “W” logo in the left corner takes you back to the post list in the admin area.

If you want to turn off full-screen mode, click on the three small dots to the right of the screen and uncheck “Full-screen mode”.

Improved navigation and accessibility
Now it's easier to see which block you're using: it will appear at the bottom of the screen.

With each new release, the block editor becomes more accessible for people who rely on screen readers or keyboard navigation to use WordPress. Keyboard navigation between elements has been improved, and your screen reader will tell you if you are in Edit or Browse mode.

What's cooking?
WordPress 5.4 has just been released, but the Core team is already hard at work preparing the next two releases planned for 2020, 5.5 and 5.6. Josepha Haden, Executive Director of WordPress.org, shared the status of some of the projects that are currently being updated, and these are some of the features that I am personally most excited to try:

A block directory, so you can discover blocks and easily install them on your site like you would plugins. This is an opportunity to experiment with blocks and think of new ways to organize and display your content.
Block support in the Customizer to make it easier to change the look of your site. This is another step towards fully editing your site with blocks. The possibilities are endless!
A navigation block that will allow you to add a menu within a post or page. For example, you can create a “Home Page” with links to relevant sources that could guide the visitor through your site.
Over to you!
What do you like most about the new version? What excites you in terms of future features. Share your thoughts and feelings in the comments!
