The book “Theory Z: How Can Companies Meet the Japanese Challenge?” was born from a discovery by writer William Ouchi. The energy crisis of the 1970s caused American companies to reduce their productivity levels while Japanese companies increased them.
“Ouchi understands that work is a very important part of a worker’s life, as they spend a lot of time in the office and therefore it is not possible to separate one thing from the other,” says Alejandro Pérez, CEO of CEOLEVEL.
There are three values linked to Theory Z :
Trust : It is understood that the employee is responsible and aims to obtain the best result.
Intimate relationship : it is essential to know the members of a team in depth.
Subtlety of relationships : each employee behaves differently and team leaders must adapt to that behavior.
“Although Ouchi's Z theory dates back to the 1980s , it is very present in current agile practices , where teams are encouraged to make their own decisions without the need for hierarchical command; they are trusted and psychologically safe environments are created for participation and decision-making,” concludes Pérez.
