There are several ways Google can identify private blog networks; however, the algorithm primarily looks for traces of sites that may belong to a group of sites.
Poorly constructed networks are usually easy to spot, thanks to things like a shared IP address, duplicate content, or the same domain owner. However, SEOs who build private blog networks are fully aware of what a trail can be and work to prevent the risk of detection as much as possible.
But one of the often forgotten detectable signs is when a group of sites link to the same domain. This is often a key indicator for identifying unnatural links. When a group of links use mostly commercial anchor text and come from relatively thin or irrelevant content to a topic, it becomes easier to identify them as part of a PBN.
