How do negative keywords help optimize ads?

When it comes to attracting customers to our business website, we carry out multiple organic or paid digital marketing strategies. Today we are going to talk about the importance of SEM strategies and how negative keywords can contribute to the optimization of our Google Ads ads .

As you know, Search Engine Marketing refers to paid advertising campaigns that we create in search engines and that help optimize the visibility of our site by appearing as suggested pages in certain searches. We have already told you about the usefulness of applying SEM to increase traffic to the site , and on this occasion we will stop to analyze those words with which we do not want our business to be associated.

What are negative keywords in Google Ads?
These are keywords that avoid triggering ads . In other words, the ads we create for our business will not be shown to any user who searches for that word or phrase. This is what Google Ads calls “negative bulk sms italy match.” For example, if our product or service is accessed by paying, it will be useful to create ads with negative words like “free,” so that users who search for that same thing for free do not find our business as a result.

The useful thing about negative keywords is that by excluding search terms from campaigns, they help focus ads only on the keywords that really interest us, filtering out unwanted clicks and achieving better targeting, thereby obtaining an increase in return on investment (ROI).

Types of negative keywords
Google distinguishes three types of negative keywords :

Broad negative match
This is the default option for negative keywords. In this case, the ad will not show if the search contains all of your negative keyword terms, even if they are in a different order than you target in your strategy. However, the ad may still show if the search contains only some of your keyword terms. A useful example that Google provides for this is:

Negative Phrase Match
In the case of phrase match negative keywords, the ad will only not be shown if the search contains all the exact terms and in the same order in which they are arranged. Even if the search includes additional words, the ad will not be shown. On the other hand, the ad will be shown if the keywords have additional characters, as long as the rest of the terms in the keyword are included in the search in the same order. Following the example above:

Phrase match negative keyword: running shoes
Will not appear: “blue running shoes”
Will appear: “running shoes”

Negative exact match
These are exact match negative keywords. This means that your ad won't show if your search contains exact keyword terms in the same order and without any additional words.
