MADRID, 08 (SERVIMEDIA)

Internet use among minors can now be considered universal in Spain, since 98% of boys and girls between 10 and 15 years old use it regularly, according to a study on the use of technology by minors published this Tuesday by the National Observatory of Technology and Society (Ontsi) of Red.es, dependent on the Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence.

This practice has increased since 2016, when it was less than 93%, and in 2020 and 2021 it has increased by three percentage points. As the age decreases, Internet use is lower, with 93% in the case of those in the 10-year-old age group. The number of minors with a mobile phone has not changed in the last five years: seven out of ten.

Nine out of ten 13-year-old boys and girls have a mobile phone, as this is the time when they are usually bought one for the first time. A figure that increases with the age of the minors, reaching 96% among 15-year-olds.

The communities with the most mom data minors with mobile phones are Extremadura (82%) and the Basque Country (76%). At the bottom are Melilla (60%) and Galicia (59%).

In the case of this device by gender, girls (almost 96%) have used it more than boys (more than 94%); this trend has continued since 2017.

POPULATIONS

By place of residence, children living in towns with fewer inhabitants (10,000 or less) use mobile phones more, but computers less than those living in more populated areas (72% compared to 65% in the case of mobile phones and 93% compared to more than 95% in the case of computers).

Although Internet use is widespread, the percentages vary depending on income. In low-income families (under 900 euros), 92% of children have access to the Internet; in high-income families (2,500 euros or more), 98%.

Those who use computers the least are those living in households with incomes below 900 euros. 85% compared to 97% of those living in families with incomes considered high (2,500 euros or more).

If we talk about mobile phones, we see that in households with lower incomes, 57% have one, compared to 67% of children who have a mobile phone in households with an income equal to or greater than 2,500 euros per month.

Depending on the number of household members, the data show that in households with only two members, mobile phone use is higher than in families with five or more members; a difference of 12 percentage points (74% versus 62%).
